De start was goed met een “propere” pile-up op 30 meter. Om 0630  UTC : QSY  20M SSB , waarschijnlijk iets te vroeg want weinig respons , dan maar 40 meter en daar was het vollen bak…

Na een uurtje terug 20meter en nu waren er tamelijk goede condities , we konden 2 VK’s loggen .Rond 0830 UTC waren we nog voor een poosje QRV op 17 en 40 meter CW.

A well hidden and very small reference … might be the reason it never has been activated !  I took a look at it a few days ago and it took me more than one hour to find the sign and a place to operate : ONFF-395 De Werft in Veerle-Laakdal (AN). Not in Averbode (VB) as announced on the ONFF list, will be corrected.(corrected now)
But this abonded area was a paradise to activate. Started at 05:57 UTC with I5FLN Luciano as first station in the log. Temperature 5C and cloudy. Cold nose, feets and hands were soon part of the fun. A good run on 40m with lots of Europeran stations, than QSY to 20 meters. Wide open to VK/ZL but unfortunatly again only 2 VK stations in the log (both with 57 signals on the meter). VK3PSR and faithfull VK5PAS are the lucky ones.
Made also about 25 CW QSO’s on 30 en 20 meters. Sorry guys but you have to be patient with me when in CW … I still hope to improve my CW skills.
Activation stopped at 09:11 UTC with 225 QSO’s in 3 continents and 30 different countries. During this 3 hour activation I have not seen one human being, I really was alone on the world !
And oh yeah, for the first time I did computer-logging,  a good experience that I will continue to do.

Mooie contacten ondanks de mindere condities. Het Mastenbos is een groot domein dat goed toegankelijk is. Speciaal voor de herdenking werd het loopgravenpad uitgestippeld langs overgebleven loopgraven en bunkers uit WO1. Sommige bunkers werden opengesteld voor het publiek, de meeste zijn nu woonplaats van talrijke vleermuizen. Met dank aan de heer John Otten.

Geen condities, noch op 40, noch op 20 m. Verscheidene vogelspotters "gespot" . Heel veel trekganzen en zwanen opgemerkt. De moeite waard om een wandeling in te maken.

OK, another un-activated and brandnew ONFF-reference knocked from the list : ONFF-469 Wijngaardberg Wezemaal. Arrived just after sunset and a curiuos little redbreast kept an eye on that strange human setting up some extra poles to sit on …
Conditions were sometimes poor, some minutes later with good openings, changing rapidly. Groundwaves were better on 20 meter than on 40 meter … strange !  Managed to work one VK : VK5PAS, Paul, is in the log. Listened for more VK or outside Europe but no luck.
The weather was excellent with at my /P-shack on the south flank a very comfortable temperature of 21°C. Even got some sunburn. Defenitly spring in Belgium.
ON3FY, the superb catering service from Radio Club Leuven, showed up again. Thanks mate!
Tried some CW but the physical situation of my right hand makes it difficult to key. Will work out another solution for this issue.
After about 4 hours of being active I made 243 QSO’s in 27 countries, 2 continents. Not bad.

Een prachtig landschap , tegen de heuvels aan , in Flanders Field. Prachtig zicht richting Frankrijk die ons de zwakke condities lieten vergeten .

Weinig QSO’s niettegenstaande een eerst activatie , was waarschijnlijk in hoofdzaak te wijten aan een slechte ontvangst…….liggen die meersen nog vol met oorlogstuig ???

Bijgevoegd de log en enkele fotos van de aktivatie vandaag. De ganse aktivatie van vetrek thuis tot aankomst terug werd gefilmd door 2 studenten die een eindwerk maken over het radio amateurisme. Ze hebben me beloofd het eindresultaat te bezorgen. Ik ben benieuwd.

Prachtig weer en een rustige standplaats in Welden en het bezoek van 3 Shetland pony’s.

166 QSO in de log en beste DX was 2 QSO met 4X.

Balenberg is also known as the “Sven Nys” hill, for those who follow off road cycling. My location for this activation was on top of this hill, 43m asl with around only flat areas …
Very strange conditions here, at my start arounf 6:00 UTC groundwave QSO’s on 40m were almost impossible. Most QSO’s had an average distance of +/- 2000 km. On 20m it was much better with two VK’s in the log : VK5SRV/M from his car and secondly Paul VK5PAS. Great to work those guys with very good signals. Listened for more VK but I think Down Under was asleep … a pity with this awesome conditions.
I tested also my new antenna : G5RV jtunior with homebrew RF choke. Worked fine, especially on 20m I improved my signal.
A second run on 40m was much better for the locals, groundwave did the job OK this time. Made also a few QSO’s on VHF and UHF and ended with 12 CW QSO’s on 30m. But still my excuses for my poor CW … still getting nervous from CW piel-ups.

Goede condities, alle continenten behalve SA en AN. Meldertbos is een mooi rustig gebied.

Hoewel goed toegankelijk en prachtig weer kwamen slechts een paar wandelaars voorbij. Dicht bij het kasteel is goed te zien hoe de natuur het vroegere kasteelpark overnam. Eerste citroenvlinders gespot. Met dank aan de heer Eddy Stas voor de toelating.

Kasteel van Meldert (WCA ON-0400 en BCA VB-021) is nu in gebruik door het Sint Janscollege.
